Dr. Roger D. Goos
(October 29, 1924 - March 7, 2011)

U.S. Veteran

Roger D. Goos, 86, of Narragansett, went to be with his Lord on March 7, 2011.


Roger grew up on a farm in Iowa, serving in the Infantry in WW II (European Theater) earning a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. He was recalled to service during the Korean War.


Roger served as Professor of Botany and Department Chair at the University of Rhode Island during the years 1970- 1995. Dr. Goos received his B.Sc, MSc and Ph.D from the University of Iowa. His work experience included the United Fruit Company in the U.S. and Central America, the National Institutes of Health, the American Type Culture Collection and the University of Hawaii before coming to the University of Rhode Island. His career took him on interesting travels to many countries, including a Fulbright Fellowship at the University of Lisbon in Portugal and an Indo-American Fellowship at the University of Madras. He served as President of the Mycological Society of America and has published many articles and papers on the subject of mycology, conducted local mushroom walks, and is well known internationally in mycological circles.


Dr. Goos was an active member and elder in his church and the Full Gospel Businessmen's Fellowship International, as well as being ordained as a minister of the Gospel.


He is survived by his wife of more than sixty-four years, Mary Lee (Engel) Goos; daughters, Marinda Lee Cox of Tuscon, AZ, Suzanne Pfisterer and her husband David of Mystic, CT; seven grandchildren, Sean M. Cox, Annie Lee Cox, Gretchen, Daniel, John and Ronald Pfisterer; brothers, Willys, Clair and George Goos and sister, Alice Conder.


A service will be held for Roger on Saturday, March 12 at 11:00 AM with Visitation 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM in Apponaug Pentecostal Church, 75 Prospect St., Warwick, RI 02886. Burial will take place at Maple Hill Cemetery in Gladbrook, Iowa.
